4/18/2015 0 Comments La Rioja Alta TastingI attended a tasting of La Rioja Alta wines on April 2, 2015 at Ancona's Wine and Liquors in Ridgefield CT. La Rioja Alta has been producing wine since the late 1800's. They are among the elite producers in Rioja and make their wine in the traditional style. That is to say, wines that have been given time to develop slowly with longer aging than is done by more "modern" producers. Tasting these wines is a treat. They undergo barrel aging from more than 2 years to over 6 years for the Gran Reservas. Only a small fraction of the world's wines are given this care and attention. The wines were the Rioja Reserva Vina Alberdi 2008, Rioja Reserva Vina Ardanza 2005, Rioja Reserva Vina Arana 2006, Rioja Gran Reserva '904' 2004, Rioja Gran Reserva '890' 2001, and the Rioja Gran Reserva '890' 1998. The Vina Alberdi is the only wine that sees new oak. I have enjoyed this many times and at over 6 years of age you can still call this a young wine. Following the Alberdi each wine got increasingly more complex and silky. It is hard to believe that wines with as much barrel and bottle age can be so lively and promise many more years of life. That is the magic of traditional producers like La Rioja Alta. This was my first time at an Ancona's event and in addition to the unique venue in their family's former home, everyone involved was friendly and very knowledgeable. It is always fun to taste with folks that love wine as much as I do. As post script I have to mention another unique feature of Ancona's Wine and Liquors. A great selection yes, but they also have 2 wine dispensers. Monique was kind enough to welcome us when we arrived early and offered to let us taste some of the wines that were opened. My favorites were a Kermit Lynch Beaujolais and the Chateau Musar 2000. Musar is the legendary wine from Lebanon. If I only lived closer!

Jon, Thank you for the fun & education on Friday evening! It really was a great event. It's interesting, the wine from the smallest northern region in Italy seemed to carry a strong memory for many. My wife really appreciated everything - so I would say it was quite a success. Hi Jon, know that all of us greatly appreciated the experience you created last weekend. I have also shared your Sauv Blanc recommendations with Meredith and the rest of the group, for which they were thankful. Thank you again and don’t be a stranger.

Greenwich 12/22 Jon, thank you so much for an informative and fun presentation! We all loved ALL of the wines! Thanks a million for being part of a wonderful night! 7/24/21 J.W. Trumbull Jon,
Thank you again for everything you did for making my husband's party a wonderful experience. I am especially thankful for the manner in which you handled the size and complexity of the party. The feedback I got was positive and everyone enjoyed the wines. They definitely will be looking out for some of the new favorites.. JV Oxford For several years the community at Waterview Landing in Shelton has sponsored an annual wine tasting afternoon held at our gazebo. It’s an informal event; everyone brings one or two bottles of their favorite wines and some munchies. Our resident wine expert, Jon Haight, moderates the event, and always makes the experience both educational and enjoyable. Jon is extremely knowledgeable about wines, both domestic and foreign. Typically Jon will rank the wines by white and red, and by maturity. Since he does not know beforehand what wines will be available it is impressive to watch his skill in sorting the wines. As the tasting progresses Jon describes the nuances of each wine and does so in terms that are easily understood. We learn, we enjoy, and a good time is had by all. Speaking for the folks at Waterview Landing, we are thankful that Jon is resident, and would hope that others can benefit from Jon’s knowledge and skills. He is excellent at what he does and has a great sense of humor to boot. Alan W. Morton President, Waterview Landing Homeowners Association Dear Jon, I wanted to drop you a note to say thank you for providing our Lions Club with a very educational and entertaining evening on October 27, 2010. The presentation you did on the basics of wine tasting combined with that of a general knowledge of Chilean Wines and Ports provided us with a very informative program that our membership enjoyed. Maybe we could consider doing this on an annual event. Thanks again. Joe Charbonneau President, Manchester Lions Club |
